Lizzo joined a rock group called prog where she sang and sometimes played her flute. Her family moved to Denver, so she was all on her own in her quest to start her career in Houston. Lizzo lived in her car, sometimes slept on flooring in her studio, and washed in the gym. Lizzo's father died when she was just twenty-one. It was a devastating loss for both of them, since they were extremely close. Following the death of her father, she left the prog band. Lizzo was able to return to Denver after a brief stay in Denver then moved to Minneapolis in 2011 at the request of a close friend. She soon became a part of the city's music scene. She was part of the girl group Chalice, GRRRL PRTY. Her debut album, Lizzobangers, was released in 2013 by an independent label.
