Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father left her family. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a child. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford applied instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. During the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
